Dr. Kurt Lisso, Leipzig's city treasurer,
and his wife and daughter after taking poison
to avoid surrender to U.S. troops, Leipzig
1945
Due to the fact that this picture was taken indoors it had artificial lighting. There seems to be soft lighting that is coming from behind the camera. The only shadows that are very visible are those made by the furniture and the curtains, but they do not seem to add to much the effect of the photo. The upper left hand corner is the lightest and just below that is the darkest part, the rest of the picture has the same color value. Most of the picture is in focus, because the photographer wanted to show off the whole scene. The windows and the outside world are out of focus in my opinion. There is defiantly a feel of deep space in this picture, I think mostly due to the angle the picture was taken from. The shapes in the picture create a positive space within the image. You can see the texture in the leather of the couch, the pleats in the curtains, the grain in the wooden wall. This image was definitely taken from a higher angle, in order to capture all three bodies. The first thing I notice is the women in middle, then the women on the couch, and then the man at the desk. The image seems to be pretty well balanced, it makes me wonder if maybe possible the bodies had been moved for the picture. The picture portrays a feeling of sadness, but then also a wonder of what could they have been hiding that was so bad. It very much makes you think.
